Data You Give Us Directly
Search Queries
A name or place entered in a search tool is sent directly to the outside company that operates that tool. The provider processes the query and supplies its results. James City County Criminal History does not retain or log those search terms on its own systems.
Messages and Contact Submissions
An email is kept as needed to prepare and deliver a response. It remains within our organization unless disclosure is required by law.
Data We Gather Automatically
Our servers receive standard technical details whenever a page loads:
- Page-view timestamps and the pages visited
- Device type and operating system
- Browser name and version
- IP address assigned to the device
- Time spent on viewed pages
- Referring site, when one is available
Cookies and Analytics
Cookies are small files stored by a browser. They help show, in aggregate, which pages receive traffic and where visits end. Analytics providers assist with that measurement. Browser controls can block cookies, although disabling them may change how parts of the site behave.

- Diagnosing errors and other technical problems
- Maintaining reliable and prompt page delivery
- Routing a search to the selected partner service
- Measuring which pages are useful or need improvement

No Criminal-Record Data on File
James City County Criminal History does not maintain, compile, or sell a database of personal criminal records. It publishes general directions to James City County Police, Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail, the Williamsburg/James City County courts, Virginia State Police CARE/CCRE, and the Virginia Sex Offender and Crimes Against Minors Registry. Visitor data is not assembled into a consumer report or a file about another person. This site is not a consumer reporting agency under the Fair Credit Reporting Act.
Third-Party Search Partners
Outside companies operate the search boxes. Their own privacy policies, retention rules, and sharing practices govern information submitted to those tools. We do not control those policies, so review the provider's terms before running a query.
Links to Other Websites
Links may lead to James City County offices, Virginia courts, state agencies, legal resources, or outside tools. Once a visitor leaves this site, the destination's policy governs. Read that policy before providing personal information.
Some advertising providers may measure activity across websites to select ads. That processing occurs through the provider's systems.
Who Might See Your Data
We do not sell personal data. Limited information may be available to:
- Analytics providers measuring traffic and performance
- Search partners processing a query submitted to their tool
- Advertising networks serving material on the pages
- Government or law-enforcement bodies acting under a valid legal order
How We Protect Your Data
Reasonable, standard safeguards protect collected data. No internet system can guarantee perfect security, however, so we cannot promise that a breach will never occur.
Users Under 18
This service is intended for adults and does not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 18. If information from a minor is identified, a request may be made for its deletion.
Your Data Rights
Applicable privacy law, including the Virginia Consumer Data Protection Act, Virginia Code § 59.1-571 et seq., may provide rights over personal data. Virginia FOIA, § 2.2-3700 et seq., governs access to qualifying public-body records, while § 19.2-389 separately limits dissemination of CCRE criminal-history information. Those public-record laws do not turn this private site into a government custodian. A visitor may:
- Request correction of inaccurate personal data
- Ask for access to personal data held about the visitor
- Seek deletion where the law provides that right
- Opt out of covered forms of processing
